Privacy Policy — Count Me Out!
Last updated: 31 August 2026
Count Me Out! (“the app”) is a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) tracker for Android and Wear OS. This policy explains what information the app handles and how. In short: the app is offline-first and private by design — the drinks and sessions you log stay on your device, and we never sell your information. The one thing that can leave your device beyond a drink search is crash reporting, and only if you switch it on — it is off by default and described in section 3.
1. Our approach
The app requires no account and has no backend server. Everything you log lives in a database on your own device. We, the developer, have no access to it, and there is no advertising or third-party tracking in the app.
2. Information stored on your device
You may enter and the app stores locally on your device:
- Profile details — name (a label of your choosing), age, gender, and weight (used to estimate BAC).
- Drinking sessions — places, times, the drinks you log (beverage, amount, ABV, timestamp), and any food/meals you record.
This information is stored only in the app’s local database. It is not uploaded to us or anyone else. Removing it is described in section 7.
3. Information sent over the internet
The app makes two types of outbound request:
- Beverage search (Open Food Facts). When you search for a drink online, your search term is sent to the Open Food Facts service to look up product details (name, ABV). This request contains only your search term — no profile data, no identifier, nothing that identifies you. Open Food Facts has its own privacy practices: https://world.openfoodfacts.org/privacy.
- Crash reporting (optional — OFF by default). You can turn on crash reporting under Reference → Send crash reports in the app. While it is on, if the app crashes or hits an error, a diagnostic report is sent to Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, containing:
- the technical details of the fault (stack trace, the app version, the screen you were on);
- your device model, Android version, and device state at the time (memory, storage, orientation);
- a randomly generated installation identifier, which lets us tell one device’s crashes apart. It is not your name, email, advertising ID, or anything you entered.
Your profile, drinks, sessions and food entries are never included. Crash reporting is off until you enable it, it can be switched off again at any time, and switching it off stops any further reports. Google processes this data as our service provider; see https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
Apart from these, no personal information leaves your device over the internet.
4. Device-to-device sync (Wear OS)
If you use the Wear OS companion, the app sends your current BAC and session details to your own paired watch using Android’s Wearable Data Layer (a local Bluetooth/Wi-Fi link between your devices). This data travels only between your phone and your watch; it is not sent to us or any third party.
5. Permissions the app requests
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Internet | Beverage search, optional crash reporting (both section 3), and the local link to your paired watch. |
| Notifications | Optional drink check-in reminders during a session. |
Run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) | Restores a scheduled drink reminder after your device restarts. |
6. What we do not do
- We do not collect or receive the data you log — profiles, drinks, sessions and meals stay on your device.
- We do not use advertising or ad-tracking SDKs, and the app does not request an advertising ID.
- We do not enable crash reporting without your consent — it is off unless you switch it on (section 3).
- We do not sell your information to anyone, ever.
- We do not require you to create an account.
7. Data retention and deletion
Your data remains on your device until you remove it. You can:
- Delete a profile or individual sessions/drinks within the app; and
- Uninstall the app, which removes all of its locally stored data from your device.
Because we never receive your data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
8. Children
The app is intended for adults and concerns alcohol consumption. It is not directed at, and should not be used by, anyone under the legal drinking age in their jurisdiction.
9. Not a medical device
BAC figures shown by the app are estimates based on the Widmark formula and general assumptions. They are not medically precise and must never be used to decide whether it is safe to drive or operate machinery. The app is not a medical device.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. If we ever add features that share your data off your device (for example, an optional feature to let a trusted sponsor view your progress), those features will be opt-in, will ask for your explicit consent, and this policy will be updated to describe them before they are released.
